Nikos Nafpliotis
Born in Athens, Greece, was originally trained as a film-maker and had a successful career producing over two-hundred sociopolitical documentaries during the explosive sixties and early seventies. During that time he lived in London and travelled all over Europe making films.
At the end of the sixties he studied jewelry-making as a hobby at the Camden Institute with the master sculptor-jeweler Rod Edwards. A year later he was presenting his work at top galleries in London including the Electrum Gallery, famous all over the world.
Returning to Athens in 1972, he found that the censorship imposed by the dictatorial regime prevented him from continuing as a film-maker. He began making jewelry full-time, becoming an immediate success. He opened his first shop in 1973 on the holy island of Patmos (where John wrote the Apocalypse) and then in Naxos, Nafplion, Paxos and Athens.
Coming to New York in the early nineties, he started designing jewelry for Donna Karan and for two and a half years he produced thirteen collections for the DK line. Tired of his association with the fashion industry, he started selling his jewelry at major retail craft fairs.
Today Nikos manages his own shop, Nikos Designs, which he established in Tarrytown, N.Y. three years ago and where he sells his one-of-a-kind pieces.
